Scooter Still Working on His Issues

Not everyone has it easy at Longtheway. Scooter, the still somewhat feral orange tabby, needs you to know that.

He’s got the entire garden garage to share with Mr. T, complete with cushy catbed and overhead winter heating. He dines on high-quality cat food, and snacks on his crunchy cat treats.

But Scooter remains skittish four years after taking up residence at Longtheway.

Some attribute his anxiety to Schuyler, who enjoys chasing Scooter and has registered interest in eating him. Others blame the raccoon that has decided to share Scooter’s quarters

“But they’re side issues. That’s what Scooter lets them think,” says his companion, Mr. T. “The truth is more complicated. He was a foundling, so he’s got some abandonment issues and probably an attachment disorder. And on top of that I know he has very complicated feelings toward me.

“See, I was originally brought to Longtheway as a companion for Scooter.  Only they had promised him a lady friend. They had her all picked out and everything. But when the man of the house – nice guy but not very detail-oriented – brought Tina home, “she” turned out to be a “he”: Mr. T – me.

“Scooter didn’t get a girlfriend; he got a stepbrother. Sure, we’re now very close, but I definitely detect resentment.

“Like I said, it’s complicated. But he’ll come around. If Schuyler doesn’t eat him, Scooter will do just fine.”
